How is a demo different from a readiness assessment?

The demo shows the family how a teaching explanation feels. The readiness discussion helps identify whether the proposed lessons are suitable now. Both can inform the same decision, but following one demonstrated question does not show mastery of a full course level.

What are you checking?

Relevant observations include number recognition, counting, response to short instructions and participation in an activity. For a child with previous experience, the discussion also considers the skills and methods already learned. Ask which observations were independent and which needed a prompt.

The assessment is for families considering the children's programme, generally for ages about 5–13. Beginners do not need to prepare a list of calculations or pass an entrance test before contacting us. Previous learners should mention that experience when enquiring so the discussion can address placement.

Does my child have to restart after learning elsewhere?

Do not assume either that a child must restart or that a previous provider's level transfers directly. Tell the trainer what was covered and ask what needs checking. A recommendation should reflect current demonstrated skills rather than a course name alone.

Is this the same as a level-completion test?

No. This page concerns the initial appointment before enrolment. Assessment of an enrolled learner's continuing progress and readiness to advance is explained separately in our progress and assessment guide.

The initial assessment and demo are free. There is no requirement to purchase a course to attend. The continuing programme has its own fees and enrolment terms, which you should review separately before choosing to join.

Search results may show free recorded courses, practice tests, scholarship tests and introductory appointments together. Those are different offers. This appointment is a readiness and placement conversation; it should not be described as a free full course or a qualification exam.

For a first-time learner

Choose a comfortable time and have pencil and paper available. Ask whether a physical abacus is needed for your appointment. There is no reason to rehearse answers beforehand: seeing the child's current understanding helps the trainer choose a more useful starting point.

For a child with previous learning

Keep an example of recent work or a workbook nearby and mention when the child last practised. Explain if a different tool layout or method was used. This is context for a recommendation, not a demand to reproduce every previous lesson.

For an online appointment

Check the joining details, connection, camera and audio. Use a quiet place where the child can hear and respond. If technical help is needed, provide it without answering the activity questions for the child. The ongoing remote course setup is covered on the online classes page.

Tell the trainer if the setting is unfamiliar or the child is uncomfortable. Give the child time to respond and allow the trainer to decide whether a prompt is useful. An appointment provides a limited observation on a particular day; it should not be turned into a broad judgement about ability.

Ask whether enough information is available to make a recommendation. If an activity is not completed, discuss what was observed and whether another conversation would help. Avoid coaching a correct answer merely to secure a particular placement.

• Readiness: What suggests that the child can begin the proposed lessons now?
• Placement: Which starting pathway is recommended, and why?
• First goal: What would the learner work on first?
• Format: Which practical observations matter when choosing online or classroom attendance?
• Support: What adult involvement may be needed initially?

Readiness, placement and format are separate questions. A child may recognise numbers yet need help participating through a screen. Another may join an online activity comfortably but need to revisit an earlier skill. Ask for the reason behind the particular recommendation.

What does the assessment not establish?

It does not diagnose a learning condition, measure intelligence or guarantee future examination results. It supports the narrower decision of where to begin in the proposed course. Do not use a teaching demo as a substitute for a professional assessment when your concern requires one.

You can enrol, ask further questions or wait. Make a short note of the recommended pathway, the reason given and any unresolved practical issue. Before payment, confirm the actual available batch, what the fee covers and the written policies that apply.

A discussion of a possible timetable does not reserve a seat. Ask how an offered place is confirmed and whether any detail has changed since the appointment. You can also review the learning stages before deciding.

Share the parent or guardian's name, a contact number, the child's age, previous abacus experience and preferred format. Ask the team to confirm the appointment length, time and preparation. Please do not include sensitive information about your child in an initial enquiry.

A simple message is enough: “My child is seven and new to abacus. We would like an assessment to discuss a suitable starting point. Please share the available appointment options.” For a previous learner, add a brief description of the recent course work.
